Summary of Film: A man is trying to invent a way of man flying but keeps getting stuck. However, Lego then helps him to solve his problem and figure our how to make man fly
Why I chose this film: I chose this film because I have always enjoyed lego and therefore I was keen to see how Lego featured in this film.
Representation.
- I think this film represents a stereotypical idea of an 'inventor'. The classic grey hair and eccentric moustache make this character easily identifiable. However in doing so, I feel this film represents people of a young age due to the inventors ideas.
- I really don't know what genres are represented in this film! I do feel that the film has positive representations in it. No crimes are committed, and no negative messages are present.
- I think that the intended audience has shaped certain elements of the film. The inventors ideas such as rocket boots is something that would appeal to younger audiences. And the inventors body language is very animated which I feel helps younger viewers understand whats going on. And the very inclusion of Lego seems to be influenced by the intended auidience
• The film I think the film deals with giving up. And that perseverance pays off. The man has clearly come up with many ideas that weren't good enough (by the looks of the big pile of paper balls) and has eventually discovered the solutions by persevering.
Narrative.
- The plot - A man is tries to find a way in which a can fly, he gets stuck, then with help from lego he find a way
- The story - An old inventor is trying to discover a way in which he would be able to fly, but after many ideas he still hasn't found a way. Then a mini lego thought factory appears and he finds himself inside it. It's in here where he has the last piece of the jigsaw and finds a way of making himself fly by using lego.
- The chronology of the narrative is linear. I think this is because complex narratives can't be used to there full effects as short films are short. Therefore I think linear narratives are more effective for short films.
- Todorov's 5 stage narrative theory can be applied to this film.
- State of equilibrium - The man content and thinking about how to make himself fly.
- A disruption of the equilibrium - He cant think of any ways that work.
- Recognition of the disruption - He throws all of his paper with his ideas on in a pile as he thinks he can't do it.
4. An attempt to repair the disruption - The mini lego thought factory appears and helps him find a way of flying.
- A reinstatement of equilibrium - The man is again content
Genre.
- I don't feel any genres are identifiable in this short film
- Short films tent to push the barriers of genre conventions. Many genres are present in short films, sometimes it's hard to identify a genre at all in a short film. The semantics are ever-changing in films and short films push the boundaries and can be used as experiments.
- David Buckingham's theory can be applied to this film. As there is no identifiable genre, this theory of genre changing due to negotiation and change seems to be in this film. I feel Buckingham's theory is a result of hybrid films, and I feel that this short film is indeed a hybrid of more than one genre.
- I feel this film cant be categorised because it opens the door for everyone to watch the film. Certain genres appeal to certain people. As a result I think more people will take an interest in the short film. furthermore many adults grew up with lego and this could appeal the the nostalgia in them.
Audience.
- I watched the film on youtube. Therefore I think people aged 15 - 50 years old (http://mashable.com/2006/10/30/are-you-an-average-youtube-user/) will watch this film. I fully expect people aged 15 - 50 will watch this film. Although I feel this film appeals to males mostly. This is because I feel the male character represents males. Older children, young adults, and adults, mostly of male gender I'd expect to watch this film.
- This film might please it's audience because of the nostalgia in the film. Also by the imagination and creatively present in the film. It also features a concept of a man with rocket-powered boots. This is something most boys imagined and dreamed about. This I believe will please the audience.
- This film is on many video sites such as Vimeo and Dailymotion, and media site called JustPressPlay. As the film is on many video sites, many people will be able to access it. Furthermore people who don't usually watch short films will come across it. And by the film being on a film website, it will be seen by short film enthusiasts.
- The film doesn't appear to have won any awards
